Open a Bed & Breakfast
Opening a Bed & Breakfast is a major decision for people and it should be looked into very carefully before committing. Too many people have gone into it thinking it is 'not really a business it is just like entertaining my friends'. One person inquiring about seminars even said,"Running a B&B is a no brainer!"
A Bed and Breakfast is definitely a 'business' and requires a lot of varied business skills:-
* marketing
* accounting
* computer knowledge
* communication and people skills
* organization
Before you commit to opening a B&B, research and study all you can. Search the Internet - there is a lot of good information there. Read a few books and attend a seminar. Have you stayed in B&Bs in your travels? You can learn a lot from this by observing and asking the hosts questions.
Be sure to have adequate funding to set the B&B up and get started. You are going to have a lot of expenses with bedding, furnishings, websites, directory advertisements, brochures and memberships. All of this is going to take place before a single dollar comes in! We have had many of our students ask us, "When is the money going to stop going out and start coming in"?
Above all, realize that B&B is going to be a major committment and can be a 7 day a week job in the busy season! It is going to affect your social life and family. It is a wonderful business if you truly like people and we have really enjoyed our 15years in it.
